Migrating to a new country is often driven by the desire for a better life. Yet, in the face of adversity, it’s easy to lose sight of the ambition that initially motivated the move. Reflecting on my own journey, a powerful memory from 25 years ago continues to fuel my determination. It all started when I arrived in Australia, and I had a conversation with an immigration officer at Perth International Airport.
As we talked about my aspirations, he asked me about my goals and how I intended to achieve them, especially since I was entering on a student visa. I confidently told him that I had already mapped out my future and believed I had the right to choose my path. My success in Australia, I explained, would depend entirely on me, not on political climates, tax laws, or economic conditions. The key to my success was rooted in my vision for a better life, and I refused to let anything derail it.
A sentiment that resonates with me deeply comes from one of Australia’s most successful migrant entrepreneurs, John Hemmes. Born in Indonesia to Dutch parents, Hemmes became one of Australia’s migrant millionaires. He says, “It’s not being an immigrant that makes you succeed. Whatever country you live in, the key is having a hunger and passion to make the best of your life.” This statement rings true for all of us, no external forces can prevent us from achieving our dreams.
That said, it’s unrealistic to expect a smooth journey. There will be challenges along the way. However, with the support of Migrant Success Academy’s comprehensive courses, you’ll be equipped to chart your own course, both personally and professionally. We provide the resources and guidance to ensure you continue moving forward toward your goals, no matter the obstacles.
A valuable lesson I learned from a mentor is that performance and competency are powerful ways to overcome doubts and prejudices, whether they relate to race, gender, ethnicity, physical abilities, or religion. When you make yourself a problem solver, you not only rise above these challenges but also position yourself for success in any marketplace.
