- Get a qualification. Though there’s no way of knowing how many career changes you will make throughout your life, it is still paramount to obtain a qualification in whatever career you desire
to pursue. Make sure the qualification aligns with your passions and be clear and honest to yourself about type of job you want. When you complete your degree, continuously look for ways to
add more value to your knowledge.
- Set professional goals. Be clear on where you want to be or what level you want to attain in your career by creating a reference frame. Without a reference frame it will be difficult to plan your pathway. An examples of a professional goals that would be worthwhile setting is: ensuring the people you are going to have within your circle of influence will inspire and push you on your
career journey.
- Understand what it takes to achieve your professional goal. a. Learning on the job. What resources are available? Which ones can you develop? Where can you get help?) b. Communication is key – don’t be shy about asking questions. c. Professional ethics – treat people with respect.
d. Be proactive with potential cultural barriers. e.Take control of your professional development – be determined! f. Identify what is within your control and what is not. g. Actively listen and make good use of information. h. Network with colleagues and peers. i. Be confident in your abilities without being pushy and arrogant
- Continue striving to be on top. a. Enjoy your work and create a good work/life balance. b. Recruit people who are better than you in an area of priority to your work. c. One size does not fit all. Identify the strength of each member of your team and be prepared to treat each member how they would like to be treated. Look after your team! d. Seek out successful people in priority areas of your work. e. Work on many targeted and priority projects at the same time.
